Market Report

September 9, 2011

Alaskan Halibut dried up towards the end of the week due to bad weather in Alaska and will be much more expensive going into next week.

With the full moon, Swordfish and Tuna will also be scarce and expensive but we expect it to drop by the end of next week as boats come in from fishing the full moon.

We are getting a little bit more pot caught Pacific Cod flown in from South West Alaska. Hopefully the weather will straighten itself out in the Northeast and we’ll see their Ground fish prices moderate but right now they are still high.

Out of the South, we are seeing some Gulf Snappers at high prices, along with Grouper. Grouper is also inching up because the Octopus season in Mexico is in full swing which affects availability from that area which really drives the market prices of Grouper. This means domestic Grouper, which is higher quality, is going up in price. The good thing is that domestic USA flagged boats should start coming back from fishing shallower waters that opened September 1st with more Grouper over the next 30-60 days. Because of this, hopefully prices may stay where they are on domestically caught Red Grouper.

On the Wild Salmon front, we were surprised to get a good shipment of Sockeyes in from the upper area of Puget Sound near the Canadian border. These fish were probably destined for the Frazier River but this will almost definitely be the last Sockeye that we will see for the year. The Coho season has gotten off to a bumpy start with prices almost as high as Sockeyes in most cases.

The real surprise of the recent Wild Salmon season is the amount of Wild Columbia River Kings that we are seeing. We will have those next week at extraordinary prices for this great fish. These are Lower River bright fish caught within fifteen miles of the ocean so they are still in salt water. The fish is bright and the meat is very red and full of natural fat making these fish taste wonderful.

If the weather holds we will see good amounts of Fresh Local Shrimp from the Southeast and South Atlantic Coast.

Crab Meat is still problematic, as are Gulf Oysters because of Tropical Storm Lee. Oysters from the South are very, very scarce and a lot of the areas are closed due to the amount of fresh water entering the Gulf. The same is true for mid-Atlantic and New England waters, a lot of the shellfish areas have been closed because of fresh water run-offs. Hopefully they will open by the end of this upcoming week. Imported Crab Meat remains a problem especially coming out of Venezuela as they remain on conservation. Hopefully we will see an improvement over the next 2-3 weeks.

We are waiting for the season to begin on Wild Striped Bass and Mid Atlantic Flounder; that should be towards the end of the month.

We have a number of All-Natural, Hormone-Free Proteins on feature this week. But the best way to see the complete line of products at Inland Seafood, including our seafood and non-seafood proteins, is to come to our food show, The 2011 Inland Seafood Experience (www.inlandseafood.com/experience) on Monday, September 12, 2011 at the AmericasMart from 1:30pm-7pm. We will be featuring Sonoma Foie Gras and Magret, Creekstone 100 % Angus Beef, Eden Farms Certified Berkshire Pork, Springer Mountain Chicken, Marcho Farms Amish Veal and many more…

In addition, some new products like the highest quality fresh Frozen Porcini Mushrooms we’ve seen along with 100% Organic Truffle Oils and Butters by Da Rosario.

We will be featuring, from Icicle Seafood, a South Atlantic Artic Crab that resembles, in taste and appearance, and is the same size as King Crab; this is called South American Centolla Crab and is much lower priced than we are seeing for Alaskan King Crab whose season has just been cut short because quota has been cut again.

We have a number of different Scallop suppliers at the show, as well as, Carlos Camerone, an All-Natural Farmed Shrimp out of Costa Rica that we will be exhibited.
