Market Report

October 25, 2011

It seems that just about wherever we look right now there is bad weather and therefore higher prices on seafood.

We were able to get some Grouper and Snapper but the prices are very high and the supply is very limited. There has been one cold front after another along the Eastern seaboard and into the Gulf of Mexico so the local domestic Grouper and Snapper boats are not fishing. In Central America it seems there is one tropical storm after another in the fishing areas of the Yucatan Peninsula, Guatemala, Panama, and Honduras.

Mahi is starting to show up but the already mentioned bad weather in Honduras, Guatemala and Western parts of Panama is causing spotty supply. The positive news is we will see a little bit of Dotted Snapper coming to us in the morning.

This weather is affecting Tuna and Swordfish from these areas as well as from the North Atlantic fishing grounds. Tuna is very high, especially for premium quality fish. Of course we have Itsumo, sushi-grade Tuna from the Philippines available.

We received a good supply of Wild Salmon from the lower 48’s. We have nice red meated, Keta Salmon at outstanding prices; $3.99 for skin-on and 4.59 for skin-off. (add 20 cents for pin boning)

In addition, we have some Troll Alaskan Kings as well as Washington Coast, Native-American Caught, King Salmon. From the Northern Puget Sound area, we have some gorgeous Coho Salmon. We may have this for the next few weeks and then it will be the end of Wild Salmon for the season.

We would like to let you know that we put up a nice supply of pin-bone out Sockeye Salmon at good prices; averaging 1 ½ to 2 ½ pounds; as well as some King Salmon and Keta Salmon. Each fillet is individually pin-boned and frozen.

For Atlantic Salmon, the outlook is much better now and in the near future. We have a good supply of Whole Scottish Salmon, and more coming during the week. We also have Norwegian Salmon Fillets on hand and a good supply of Chilean Salmon at very reasonable prices.

A great success has been the Norwegian Salmon Trout/Steelhead that is super fat and super large; averaging 13 pounds this week. The price is excellent and this fish probably has better fat; and therefore flavor; than any Farmed Salmon that we have ever seen. You owe it to yourself to try it!

We received another shipment of Kona Kampachiâ(http://www.kona-blue.com/aboutus.php) from the big island of Hawaii. This is a terrific fish and a favorite among those who have tried it.

We also have a good supply of Farmed Cobia on hand, with more arriving almost daily. Prices are still outstanding and we are featuring this fish so you can see how versatile it is.

Flounder and Striped Bass still have not showed up with any strength because the boats in the Mid Atlantic have not been able to get out. With better weather, we should see a greater supply in the coming weeks.

Trout prices are going to be going up dramatically for next week. This is caused by this summer’s heat and drought which affected the growth rate and that means a lack of product; especially on our Carolina Mountain Trout. We would like you to look at red meat Trout and Premium white meat Trout from Columbia; excellent quality and price as an alternative.

Farm Raised Catfish prices seem to be shooting up. The land is being used for cotton, corn and soybean production and this does not look like it is going to change. We are bringing in a product from Florida’s Lake Okeechobee that we are able to get in a 5-7 oz size which we will be selling for $4.29/lb. This is around a dollar and half savings over farmed catfish.

Tilapia seems steady in pricing lately but certain larger sizes are scarcer than we would like and this situation will remain in effect until the first of the year.

We are starting to see increased demand for Farmed Turbot and we will begin to bring that in more regularly.

Supply problems are prevalent with Loup de Mer. The financial problems and transportation strikes in Greece have caused some issues but we should see our next shipment on Friday. Thanks for being patient.

We are so upset about this fish situation that we are getting a little crabby about it so we are going to run some Crab Specials!

Fresh Jumbo Lump (Domestic and Imported) for $18.99/lb
Regular Lump/Backfin from Venezuela for $12.99/lb
                           Medium Stone Crabs for $10.95/lb

We also have Wild Alaskan Golden King Crab (2 lb and up clusters) coming in this week. Most of these are pre-sold but we do have some extra. Call your representative for prices.

With the price of King Crab soaring, we have sourced this wonderful new Turkayi Crab from the Southern Atlantic. It looks and tastes like King Crab, at a better price. Ask your Inland Representative for details and pricing.

It’s not Crab, but we are also featuring our Jumbo Lobster Meat at $21.50/lb for 5 bags or more (10 pounds). A nice savings over our normal price.

We also have 4-5 oz Maine Lobster Tails for $17.66/lb if you buy 5 cases (50 pounds) or more. Live prices may actually come down over the next 2-3 weeks if we have good weather in Maine.

Scallops seem to being inching up because of lack of quota and it will probably go up even more over the coming months.

Frozen Shrimp prices are going up so now is the time to buy as much as your freezer can hold for the next couple of months. There is going to be some Fresh Shrimp from Georgia and Carolina this week and sizes are getting larger as we get to end of the season.

Please let us know what your needs will be for shucked Oyster orders early this year so we can let our suppliers know what to open for us when the time comes. Letting us know in advance what you need for your traditional Southern Oyster Turkey Stuffing will prevent any disappointment for Thanksgiving!

Remember Thanksgiving is less than a month away so if you haven’t thought about your Holiday buffet dinner or even Turkey pre-orders, please let us know. We will be bringing in pre-orders on Bell & Evans and All–Natural Koch Farm Turkeys this year.
