Market Report
May 31, 2011
Hopes for a quick and less expensive opening to the Wild Salmon season, with the tremendous return of the Copper River, was bashed by this past weekend’s catch being less than was expected. Many producers pre-sold Sockeyes in anticipation of another overwhelming catch that did not
materialize this weekend. This meant that Copper River Sockeyes became scarce as buyers scrambled to put Fresh Copper River Sockeyes in the ads as soon as possible as the prices were thought to be reasonable.
The Copper River Sockeyes, which are the first real wild fish in any volume for the first few weeks, are not as numerous as we hoped. Yes, there will be fish, but it will not be as cheap as we had hoped. Hopefully, as more areas open in the next 10 days, prices will come back down to where they were last week.
The price last week that was being offered by many suppliers are not available now. The good news is all in all these fish are $3.00-$4.00 less than this time last year. It is hoped that as more Salmon show up in other areas it will be like what happened in the Copper River with early returning abundant fish to lower prices for us all.
We do have an inventory of Copper River Kings that are way down in price, plus some Troll Kings from off of the Washington/Oregon coast, as well as, a few Ivory Troll Kings and Columbia River Kings at great prices.
Atlantic Salmon prices are steady-to-slightly down. Hopefully we will be able to move prices down further in the near future. Scottish Salmon is also less expensive on the medium sizes.
After the full moon, Swordfish prices should come down this week even though prices did spike during the Memorial Day weekend. First catches of Swordfish are coming in from Nova Scotia and off of the New England coast.
Mahi remains expensive.
Grouper and Snapper are starting to show up at more reasonable prices. *Check with your sales representative for pricing.
There are still fresh Soft Shell Crabs. They are more expensive but they will be more available as the week continues. Even though they are a little higher in price, they are still a great value.
Crabmeat prices are down so you need to check your fresh crabmeat supply.
With the beginning of summer in June, Oyster sales and availability drop as certain areas of the south close for protection against vibrio outbreaks. Prices of select gallons and other southern oysters are sure to go up. To mitigate this pressure, there should be more supply from Canada and the Northeast, as well as, West Coast Oysters.
We have a surprise shipment of peeled Rock Shrimp but we also suggest that people look at the Bluefoot All Natural Saltwater Shrimp from Ecuador. These are averaging a 40/50 count and they are still on special. This fantastic fresh shrimp option is raised in an all natural, eco-friendly environment on the coast of Ecuador where sustainability is the main goal. You’ll love their pure taste and firm texture courtesy of swift Pacific saltwater tidal currents that naturally replenish the ponds.
