Market Report
May 27, 2011
This Memorial Day weekend is getting off to a booming start and Copper River Sockeye Salmon are returning in numbers that have not been seen in years.
During the first 3 openings, 80% of the total Copper River Sockeye projected for this season has been met with almost 3 ½ weeks still remaining! Today there is a 36 hour opener which means that there has been plenty of fish going upstream to spawn. In Alaska the Department of Fisherie’s first priority is to make sure enough salmon get upriver to sustain the population of sockeyes (as well as all salmon runs) for the future. It looks like a banner year for Copper River Sockeye with 2 -3 times the projected amount returning to spawn! We hope this trend continues in other areas of Alaska as it will help fill a world-wide salmon shortage; especially in the US.
We have low prices on Sockeyes and Kings out of the US and Canada for this weekend. The only problem with these wild salmon is that we are only getting a trickle out of Alaska because airspace is problematic. No one was expecting this amount of fish in the Copper River. Plants are backed up and the infrastructure for trucking product to the lower 48 was not in place this early. Hopefully we can have product later today for Saturday delivery, as well as weeks ahead. Prices are truly outstanding and we believe that they should hold in the weeks ahead.
We at Inland believe IT IS TIME TO PUT WILD ALASKAN SALMON ON YOUR MENU FOR THE NEXT 12-16 WEEKS!!! Your customers and American fishers will thank you.
We were hoping, and heard rumors, that Atlantic Salmon would follow suit and start dropping in price but we are not seeing it as of yet; but we believe it is just around the corner.
Meanwhile, there is plenty of Swordfish and Tuna for grilling this weekend.
We have on hand Red & White Troll Kings, a few Copper River Kings and some Columbia River Kings. All make a terrific choice for the holidays. If the planes arrive Friday from Alaska we will also have lots of Copper River Sockeyes for this weekend.
Halibut is remaining steady in its pricing and it should remain that way next week.
Grouper, Snapper and Swordfish prices should be edging down as well.
Tuna, with more of a world-wide demand, seems to be fairly stable.
Cod should be plentiful next week.
One issue is a lack of Flounder almost nationwide until the boats in New England can get out and fish.
A great choice to feature instead of flounder would be Amberjack over the next week.
On the Shellfish front, we are hoping to be clear of all shellfish by this weekend so that we can start stocking fresh on Monday.
Hopefully Lobster prices will trickle down, but bad weather in the Maritime Provinces of Canada has actually seen boat prices increase instead of decrease over the last 7 days.
Here is some good news; we are still seeing plenty of Soft Shells Crabs. Prices are up slightly but we can still get good quantities.
Fresh Crabmeat is coming down; both import and domestic.
The 1st of June begins a new season on Wild Striped Bass, with new quotas. Hopefully, this will mean large beautiful fish in the marketplace by the end of next week.
*As a reminder, we will be closed on Monday, May 30th, in observance of Memorial Day.*
