Market Report
June 28, 2011
As the 4th of July weekend approaches, this week promises to be a good one for seafood.
We have great quality fresh Alaskan King Salmon and Columbia River Kings from Astoria, Oregon in our door. Prices are as low as they have been in years and this is lower river and ocean caught fish!
We have another shipment of Sockeyes coming in from Prince William Sound today and our prices are dropping to reflect our great purchase price. We will have pin bone out Sockeye Salmon fillets at well below $10/lb! *Speak with your sales representative for pricing details.
We are receiving a good supply of Ketas with more coming on Thursday. Last week we ran a special and could hardly keep up with demand. We are extending through this weekend!
We do have the last bit of Copper River King Salmon on hand from the last opener and this will probably be it for the spring run of Copper River from what we are hearing.
*As a note, the Yukon River will not allow any fishing for King Salmon so if you are looking for that fat, beautiful fish, look to these Copper River fish or the early summer run of Columbia River Kings.
Swordfish seems to be falling and we should have a new price by mid–week along with a new shipment that we just unloaded. This is a great grilling fish and wonderful for this weekend.
Tuna is steady and actually showing some moderation in pricing. We did get another 700 lb Bluefin in this morning and it is gorgeous sushi quality along with another Itsumo Tuna shipment due in later today. Good 2G & 2 plus Tuna are a bargain this week as well.
We are starting to see some large Mahi out of Baja, Mexico, prices are not cheap but the quality is terrific.
Northeastern Fish remains expensive and we expect it to stay that way for the rest of the week. No bargains in Cod or Haddock but pre-cut Georges Bank Flounder is reasonable, as is Pollack.
Grouper is a good value from both Mexico and Florida. It is not as low as in years past but with the price of fuel and freight it is less than it has been.
We have some more fresh caught Drum coming in from Lake Pontchartrain and Lake Bourne in the western part of Louisiana.
Flounder is still expensive, but good quality. Look to the Georges Bank flounder as we
mentioned earlier for a less expensive flat fish.
Striped Bass seasons are starting out of Maryland and Rhode Island and we are going to have lower prices starting today on this great fish. The population of Striped Bass has rebounded and is now booming! It is a great fish success story after pollution and habitat degradation nearly destroyed these fish in the 70’s & 80’s.
Speaking of flatfish from the Northeast we have the king of them all, Hook & Line Northeastern Halibut, hitting our docks tomorrow morning. These are sushi quality fish and as they were described to us, you could bounce a quarter off of them and catch it without bending over!
Scallops are steady in price but Crab Meat is inching up slightly as the weather warms up and the crabs are digging into the mud.
We are expecting a small amount of Fresh Shrimp in today including some 10/15’s and 16/20’s. Other than that, the shrimp are still too small for harvesting off of the Georgia and Carolina coast and the season has been delayed yet again. What we are getting is coming in from the Gulf of Mexico.
Look for our freshly peeled rock shrimp and our Blue Foot peeled 41/50 finished count sustainably grown and farmed, salt water, all-natural shrimp for your fresh shrimp fix.
Please let us know your needs for any Shellfish for this weekend. In order to keep the freshest stock possible, we attempt to clear out our inventory of Oysters, Clams and Mussels as we go into long weekends.
Softshell Crabs are going to be hard to get and very expensive this week. It’s too hot and the crabs are digging in the mud.
We have a lot of great grilling specials for this Holiday weekend on Montana Ranch & Painted Hills Beef, Springer Mountain Chicken, Le Quebecois and Marcho Farms Natural Veal and Colorado All-Natural Lamb. *Check with your sales rep for the latest specials of the week on these hormone–free, antibiotic-free all natural items.
