Market Report

January 26, 2012
Things are beginning to open up with seafood as boats are starting to come in. We’re going to start with a quick look….
From the South…
Bad weather has kept Flounder boats from landing. In the mid-Atlantic and South, Flounder boats are just getting back out. Prices are up a bit on Flounder; hopefully they will drop by the weekend but it is still a great value in fresh seafood.
Striped Bass is very, very tight. The large fish have gone out to sea and what is left is small and the prices, unfortunately, are not small.
We are getting various by-catches of Wild Redfish out of the mid-Atlantic and some other by-catches of Triggers. The season is now open in Mississippi and some good catches of Redfish are starting to show up.
In the South we are starting to see some Snappers show up. We should have Gulf Red Snapper in here on Friday. We do have Yellowtails in from the Keys. We also have Mutton Snapper from the west coast of Florida as well as Pink Snapper from the Carolinas and domestic, local Carolina B-liners landing today.
We have a South Carolina Swordfish trip in our dock right now. The product is exceptional; the price is high but really not too bad compared to where it has been but it is a local short trip fish.
Yesterday we landed a boat in Louisiana for Tuna and we have a great supply right now. Prices are very expensive but the quality and freshness is superb. We also have a bit of Escolar in from this boat.
Off of the south-Atlantic coast we are getting some Amberjack which is coming in almost daily.
From the northern Atlantic Coast of Florida we also have some Golden Tile coming into our building. Golden Tile is a very reasonably priced fish and a wonderful treat. The season is short so you ought to feature it while you can.
We are also getting in good landings of Red Grouper out of the Gulf and we expect to have a little bit of Scamp and Black Grouper in for the weekend as a small by-catch from these boats as they come in to shore.
We also landed some Pompano in the Everglades and we also have a good supply of Speckled Trout coming in our plant.
From the Northeast…
We landed a couple of short trip East Coast Halibut; they are extremely fresh. We have these fish in stock and prices have been reduced because we made a good buy and the quality is exceptional.
We also have a good supply of Cod, Monktail, Skate, and Haddock from the mid-Atlantic as well as whole Hake which is a great fish.
Also, if you haven’t tried our frozen-at-sea Wolffish you need to give it a look.
We have some Squid coming in from Rhode Island this afternoon.
On the Farm-raised front…
Our Spanish Farm-Raised European Turbot is being met with great customer approval. The price is much lower than the product out of Chile, the freshness is much better, and the fish seem to be thicker for the size than what we have been getting out of Chile. Prices are 15% less than Chilean which makes this a great special for what is considered the king of European Flat fish.
We also have a small shipment of farm-raised Cobia coming in from Peru as well as a good supply of Loup de Mer and Dorade arriving from Greece.
There is plenty of Norwegian Salmon Trout (Steelhead) that is arriving today. People who are trying this fish tell us that it is the tastiest farm-raised Salmon type fish going right now.
We have a good supply of Scottish Salmon hitting the doors this weekend; prices are very good.
We also have Chilean Salmon in good quantities at great prices especially if you buy a full 35 pound case.
We also have Loch Duart All-Natural Salmon from Scotland and All-Natural Blue Tilapia from Clean Fish in the building; excellent quality on both these seafood items.
Farmed Raised Catfish prices are coming down a little bit. It is the first sign of what we hope becomes a downward trend.
From the Southern Hemisphere…
We are getting some Speckled Trout in from Mexico. We are also expecting some imported Grouper and Grouper filet. But the big news is Speckled Trout. We are starting to see good landings of Speckled Trout from the Yucatan/ Progresso area. Prices are outstanding and the quality is superb.
We found a guy who actually insists that the boats take ice and eviscerate the fish before he receives it and this has made a great difference in the quality. We think you ought to try this fish so we are featuring it this weekend for $5.99/lb for skin-on filets and for 1-2 & 2-4 pound at $3.29/lb for whole fish.
From the West Coast…
Fish are very scarce as storms keep battering that area. We’re having trouble getting any traction to get fish out of there at the present time.
One exception to Pacific product that we are getting almost daily this week in good quantities is Alaskan Cod at great prices.
Shellfish is plentiful but we are limiting our selection because of date issues and we are trying to make sure that people use what we have. Pre-orders on specialty Oysters are definitely encouraged because we are not going to speculate too much on any Oysters anymore.
We just got in another two kilos (4.4lbs) of Fresh Perigord Truffles from Europe; the quality is exceptional and the price is really superb. These truffles will go great with the Northeastern Halibut, Pompano, Flounder, and Lobster that are coming into our plant this week.
