Market Report
August 9, 2011
Unfortunately, in the world of seafood, prices are not going to react like U.S. stocks and crash because there is still worldwide demand for our U.S. caught seafood as well as products from throughout the world….but there are some bright spots.First and foremost, if you haven’t tried Viking Village Scallops from the Cape May Peninsula in New Jersey you need to try them. Boats are coming back from the newly opened area with lots of Scallops, especially U-10’s and U-12’s. The boats at Viking Village stay out less than 24 hours! The good news is that when we get our shipment on Wednesday night, we will be lowering prices to reflect the increased catch of bigger Scallops from the “closed areas” openings.
Another bright spot right now is Swordfish. Even though the market is up from where it was last week because of the impending full moon, prices are still very reasonable and the quality is excellent.
Tuna is also slightly up in price but the quality is also. Tuna is a very good buy right now and we have Albacore, Yellow Fin, Big Eye and one beautiful Blue Fin in stock.
Sockeye Salmon is going to be becoming more expensive as the days and weeks go on, unless we get good news out of the Fraser River for future openings from the Northern Puget Sound and Johnstone Straights in Canada.
Cohos have not developed anywhere in Alaska yet and prices are actually higher for Cohos than they are for Sockeyes, as ridiculous as that sounds.
There is good news here and that is that there are plenty of King Salmon available from the troll fisheries in Puget Sound, and Canada, and there will be availability this week at new lower prices. We think that this will be a good bet for the next ten to fourteen days.
The Arctic Ketas from Kotzebue are still going strong. These beautiful, high fat, wild salmon are the best priced wild salmon on the market and will be arriving, fresh, until about mid- September.
Grouper is steady and so is Imported Snapper.
Gulf Red Snapper has taken a spike up and will probably remain that way for the next week or two as people try to figure out which way the tropical storms are going.
We are seeing a lot of excellent quality Dotted Snapper and for a surprise we have a shipment of short-trip, Domestically-caught, Florida Yelloweye Snapper in our door today at a great price. The quality is superb and we think that Yelloweye Snapper is as close as any fish gets to the quality of genuine Gulf Red Snapper.
The Mahi market is down a little bit this week; it’s still very high but it is not in the stratosphere.
What is in the stratosphere is the price of Halibut. Although we have great day-boat Maine and Canadian Halibut landings, prices are way up.
On another seafood front, we expect to see good quantities of Alaskan Cod come in as the Salmon season winds down in Alaska.
Northeastern Groundfish remains very expensive as well as Northeastern Flatfish.
We are getting a good supply of Wild Striped Bass. Even though the price is up slightly, the quality is superb. We are expecting some day-boat Black Bass, as well. In addition, we think there should be some good landings of Stripers for the rest of the week.
We wrote briefly last Friday about the Shrimp market in the U.S. We are still getting great Fresh Shrimp into our plants daily. Now is the time to look for fresh shrimp coming in from the Georgia and Carolina coasts. Prices are very good and we lowered the fresh prices again this week. Also check out our frozen offerings, including our frozen domestic Shrimp as well as all-natural sustainable farm-raised Shrimp from Cleanfish and out of Costa Rica.
As for Oysters, there are still problems down in the Gulf and in parts of the Northwest. These areas are closed with Vibrio warnings and red tide but we are repeating our special on Virginia Watch House Oysters at $36. You have to try these Chesapeake beauties!
On the All-natural Protein front, we are running a special this week on Eden Farms' 100% Certified Berkshire All-Natural 10-Bone Rib Racks, as well as, Le Quebecois 6-Bone Rib Racks. We are also running specials on Painted Hills Ribeyes for one more week at $7.99/lb if you by
