Market Report

August 30, 2011

Although Hurricane Irene hit this weekend, the affects are sure to be felt over the coming days.

As far as we can tell at this point, damage to fishing fleets has been minimal. There has been a lot of flooding but most vessels have been able to get out in the past 2 days and waters are primed to fish after turbulent weather.

The Gulf of Mexico, unaffected by the storm, has been producing some absolutely gorgeous Tuna, Swordfish, American Red Snapper and Pompano. We have sold all of the Pompano that arrived yesterday but we are expecting more in shortly.

This week is the beginning of the end of grilling season! As Labor Day approaches, make sure that you consider Tuna and Swordfish for the grill. Supply is great and the prices are some of the best of the year.

Flounder and Grouper remain steady, even with Octopus season in full swing in Mexico.

It is also your last opportunity to get some species of Wild Salmon.
We will see limited amounts of Kings and Sockeyes. We will however see Cohos and Ketas for a little bit longer.

The supply shortage of Squid has been rectified and we should see some fresh product by Thursday.

The only information about after-effects of the storm that we know for sure is that North Carolina has halted Shellfish production until precautionary testing is done. This is standard protocol after flooding waters. We will keep you posted as we learn more.

We took some strong positions in anticipation and our shellfish supply is good. We have the relationships to fill in some gaps in supply but please order shellfish early to ensure that your orders are filled.

We have some terrific quality of Firm Shell Lobsters at great prices for this time of year.

Viking Village Scallops are expected in tomorrow. We will not be receiving a late week shipment. If you are one of the people who has started using this item and you must have it, make sure that you get your order in early!

We are starting to see the transition from Brown Shrimp to White Shrimp. Florida and Georgia were not impacted by the weather and they are starting to produce. We are not seeing bigger than 21/25’s, but the quality and supply are great. For those of you holding out for Beautiful East Coast White Shrimp, this is the product. As the season goes on, it should get even better.
