Market Report
August 19, 2011
The good news is that Swordfish is becoming more plentiful and prices are going to be way down for next week. It may be a good idea to stock up what you can because Swordfish traditionally is very popular for Labor Day grilling especially in the New England states.
Tuna will also probably be down slightly for the upcoming week.
Bi-catches are slim to none, so we’re not seeing a lot of Escolar or Wahoo on the boats right now. Hopefully that will rectify itself in the coming days.
Another thing beginning to show a little bit of a downward trend is Mahi Mahi which is coming out of Peru and beginning to be seen in Ecuador. Hopefully this portends a real big upcoming season.
In addition, we are seeing landings of Corvina and Snapper coming in from the middle Caribbean, especially Dotted Lanes and some Venezuelan Red Snapper. Gulf Reds are still fairly scarce and prices are up there on domestic fish.
We are seeing good landings in the mid-Atlantic of both Grey and Golden Tilefish with a little bit of expensive Wild Striped Bass. The good news is that they are very large sizes of Wild Striped Bass.
Pound Net Flounders are starting to show, but the hot weather on the East Coast is causing them to remain out at sea.
We are getting good landings of Scallops and prices on big Scallops, especially U-12’s and U-10’s, have moderated and will probably remain so for the next 4-5 weeks or until the season is closed due to reaching catch limits in the newly opened areas off the Atlantic.
For the upcoming week, Atlantic Salmon will remain fairly constant but Wild Kings are the go-to species for Wild Salmon, as well as the Arctic Ketas from Kotzebue which have the meat color of a good Coho Salmon. By the way, Cohos have been scarce and will probably remain so until the beginning of September. Sockeyes seem to be just about over for the season everywhere including Canada and Northern Puget Sound.
Grouper will probably be tight for the upcoming weeks as Mexican boats gear up for their Octopus season. We have a good supply of Domestic Grouper coming in this morning and also at the beginning of next week but we think prices will escalate.
One of the features that we have this week is Wild Lake Okeechobee Catfish. Chefs have been giving this native local Catfish rave reviews saying that it tastes like great Catfish used to taste; and that is very true. Great quality and the price is $2 under where the price of Farm-raised Catfish is now. You need to try this great item.
We may see some more Soft-Shell Crabs next week out of the mid-Atlantic.
There’s a lot more Coastal White Shrimp showing up each and every week and they grow to a little bit larger size.
Lobsters are steady and we should begin with some Firm New-Shells very shortly. We have a new lower price on Jumbo Lobster Lump; the best fresh Lobster product around! It is made with just the Knuckles that resemble giant pieces of crab but they are lobster. How good does that sound?
In addition, we’re seeing increases in prices on Blue Crab Meat out of the Gulf, and Venezuela is now officially on conservation. We’re hoping to get some Imported Crab Meat out of other areas, so stay tuned.
Oysters are still slightly problematic although we did get more selections of West Coast Oysters for this week. Watch House Oysters from the mid-Atlantic are still a daily special along with Chincoteagues and Misty Points. They are less expensive than the Northern Oysters from Canada, Massachusetts, and Maine.
On the Beef front, because of the price of corn, things have really escalated in price and we think that it will remain that way. We’re seeing a couple of bargains here and there and will be running specials on Veal, Beef, and our various Pork products through Labor Day Week.
